The Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) IgM Antibody Test measures the presence of IgM antibodies in the blood, which are produced by the immune system in response to a Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection. HAV is a small, 27 nm RNA virus primarily transmitted through the fecal-oral route, often associated with unsanitary conditions, close personal contact, or contaminated food and water.

Key Information About Hepatitis A:

• Transmission: The virus is commonly spread through contaminated food and water, especially in areas with poor sanitation. It can also spread through close contact with an infected person.
• Age-Related Symptoms: While about 70% of children under 6 years with HAV infection are asymptomatic, older children and adults typically show symptoms. Around 70% of adults with HAV will develop jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes, along with other symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and abdominal pain.
• Incubation Period: The incubation period for Hepatitis A is relatively short, typically ranging from 15 to 45 days, with an average of 25 days.
