The KFT (Kidney Function Test) or RFT (Renal Function Test) is a group of blood and urine tests used to assess how well the kidneys are functioning. These tests measure the levels of various substances in the blood and urine that are processed by the kidneys. The goal is to detect early signs of kidney damage or dysfunction.
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Measures the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood, which is a waste product formed when protein is broken down. Elevated levels can indicate kidney dysfunction, dehydration, or other conditions affecting the kidneys.
Serum Creatinine: Measures the level of creatinine, a waste product from muscle metabolism, in the blood. The kidneys normally filter out creatinine, so elevated levels can suggest impaired kidney function.
Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR): An estimate of kidney function based on serum creatinine, age, gender, and race. It provides an approximation of how well the kidneys are filtering blood. A lower eGFR indicates decreased kidney function.
Urine Protein: Measures the amount of protein in the urine. Normally, there is little to no protein in urine, but increased levels can indicate kidney damage or disease.
Urine Creatinine: Similar to serum creatinine but in the urine. It is sometimes used in calculations to assess kidney function or estimate the albumin-to-creatinine ratio.
Urine Albumin: Tests for the presence of albumin, a protein that, when found in the urine in high amounts, can be an early sign of kidney damage, especially in diabetes or hypertension.
Assess kidney health: These tests are commonly ordered to evaluate overall kidney function, particularly in individuals at risk for kidney disease (such as those with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease).
Detect kidney damage or disease: Early stages of kidney disease often show no symptoms, but these tests can detect abnormalities in kidney function before more severe symptoms develop.
Monitor chronic kidney disease (CKD): For patients already diagnosed with kidney disease, these tests are used regularly to monitor progression and effectiveness of treatment.
Check kidney function before medical procedures: Certain treatments or medications can affect kidney function, so doctors may order KFT/RFT before prescribing specific drugs or conducting surgeries.
