Dengue fever and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) are tropical diseases caused by four closely related virus serotypes of the Flavivirus genus. This test detects the NS1 antigen of Dengue in blood serum. The NS1 antigen is a glycoprotein essential for the virus's survival, although it does not have any known biological activity.
The NS1 antigen is present in high concentrations in the blood during the early phase of dengue infection, typically from day 1 after the onset of fever. A positive result indicates the presence of the NS1 antigen, suggesting a dengue infection. A negative result means the NS1 antigen is not detected.
This test is particularly useful for diagnosing early-stage acute dengue infection.
