The Herpes Simplex Virus I – IgM Test is a blood test designed to detect HSV-1 infection. Rather than detecting the virus directly, this test identifies IgM antibodies, which are produced by the body in response to a recent HSV-1 infection.
IgM antibodies appear shortly after the infection and indicate that the infection is recent or active. Unlike IgM, IgG antibodies develop later and remain in the body for life, indicating past exposure to the virus. While the IgG test helps identify previous HSV-1 infections, the IgM test is particularly useful for detecting newly acquired HSV-1 infections.
